Why the Japanes Economy Doesn't Work Well

The long-term recession of the Japanes economy is structurally attributed to the political power and the interior establishment, not high currency value, globalization, the developing nations closely running in chase of them.

The Japanese people have been too much dependent upon the ruling political parties and adminstrative bureaucracy, which are generally proved as incompetent and lethargic in any countries around the world. Historically analysing, competent leaders and excellent bureacracy are exceptions. Only Advanced countries have continually had some great or excellent leaders, and the great people, for example, the U.S, UK, France, Germany, Italy, and the small but wealthy nations like Swiss, Denmark, Sweden in the Western Europe.

Since the 1990s of the bursting of bubble economy there has had no excellent leaders in Japan like Thatcher, Reagan, Clinton, earlier Blair. The establishment consisting of the political bosses and high bureacrats from a few prestigious families and universaties has preferred some smooth improvements to innovation and revolutionary changes.

Japan’s economy needs the voluntary participation of the grass-rooters, not mobilized by the bureaucratic campaigns or catch-phrases of the political leaders. They have too much relied on the privileged elite as if the ancestors had been loyal to Shogun and Samurai classes unconditionally in the medieval ages.

Whether a country becomes a real advanced nation or not lies in political leaders being able to expolit the grass-rooters fully and orderly. Japan’s economy has been said for a long time, “The country is wealthy, but the people are poor.” Dispite having heard such a ‘mocking’ indication, the Japanese grass-rooters have obeyed to the establishment. In fact, Japan has the foolishly innocent people as well as the unexcellent leaders. They believed that the elites would guide them to best directions, which afterwards proved to impose only sacrifices on them. The Japanese elites have traditional wealthy nation’s biases, which mean strong military and foreign power, exterior status of state regardless of individual welfare and happiness. Except the Western democratic countries, most countries have such an out-of-dated vision. The Chinese people and elites also seem to have such a wrong goal incurred from a collective way of thinking.

The Asians need the democracy of economy. In the era of globalization, the borderline is not so important. It is meaningless, if the economomic development does not lead to individual wealth and happiness. If the economic fruits are turing to the elites and few wealthy classes, we must change the regime and institutions. The Asians must understand the real value of individualism. It is wrongly known to the Asains that the Western society has had no tradtion of community spirit. Absolute wrong. The western democratic societies make highly of individual happiness and benefit, in the base of the community spirit. The Asians must learn more, not boasting temporary eccnomic prosperity. The Explosive Selling of the Book Named 'Justice'

“Justice: What’s the Right Thing to do?” written by Michael Sandel, Harvard professor, was translated into Korean language about three months ago. This serious, heavy-subject book was sold over 300,000 copies in Korea.

As the Korea’s publisher was excited at the tremendous hit, it invited Michael Sandel to give his lecture for the promotion of more selling. So many people gathered to hear the lecture at a big hall of a university, a surprised attendant jokingly said, “ A dead Micahel Jackson came here to sing?”

‘Justice:--‘ could be classified as the humanities and liberal arts category, in which if a new book is sold over over 10,000 copies, the one is regarded a super bestseller in Korea. Therefore, the figure of over 300,000 copies is a very, very super bestseller. This size of selling is a kind of social phenomenon, which needs to be interpreted, for example, why people read it, what their hidden intentions represent.

In my opinion, Korean people seem to feel that the present social situation is not in a state of justice, especially part of which is at least to blame on the recent hearings about some minister nominees.

While the polarization of wealth between the high and low classes widens greatly, the irregularities of some minister nominees were consecutively disclosed in a seires of hearings. An appointee to the Knowledge Economy minister's post had bought an old shabby house one year before the local government’s announcement of the developmemt master plan. Another appointee to Culutre and Tourism minister's post moved his addresses illegally in order to send daughters to good schools. Even the incumbent foreign minister resigned his office on suspicion that he might interfere with the recruitment of the new staff members belonging to his mininstry. His daughter was by chance passed alone in the special adopting test.

The present young and middle-aged generations are more furtherly angry about these irregularities of the high classes than the elder one. The public senses aggravated rapidly. The ruling power was forced to cancel the appointment of the two nominees and accepted the resignation of the foreign minister immediately.

In Korea, there have existed two insensitivities, one is no sense for safety, another no sense for irregularities. No paying attention to safety still results in many industrial disasters and accidents every year. No sense for the irregularities, however, shows basical changes. The young and middle-aged generations (the thirties and forties) do not forgive the elites misdeeds sternly. More encouragingly, the generations would not accommodate themselves to corruption other than the elder ones.

Although the steps towards the advanced nations are slow, it seems clear that the young power is changing the established people’s insensitivities for several customary corruption and nepotism forcibly. (The end)

Why aren't there 'Theodore Roosevelt' in Korea

In the early nineteen hundreds, President Theodore Roosevelt enforced the Sherman Anti-Trust Law against the only railroad company [trust] that a group of wealth American businessmen formed jointly.

Roosevelt said he would no compromise in enforcing the law. He asked the Supreme Court to break up the railroad trust. “We are not attacking these big companies. We are only trying to do away with any evil in them. We are not hostile to them. But we believe they must be controlled to serve the public good.” The Supreme Court eventually ruled against the railroad trust.

Theodore Roosevelt also successfully coordinated the coal miners’ strikes of 1902 after many complications.

The present President smashed the hardlined Korean Confederation of Trade Unions as soon as he took office. The unions were gradually softened to continual governmental threats. Now the horned bull was changed to a meek sheep.

Some experts friendly to medium- and small-sized companies have criticized that big companies, especially conglomerates, squeeze extra ‘profits’ out of them. But it is also problematic that the medium and small companies are dependent upon the big ones excessively without technological and managerial efforts.

The President stressed many times that the conglomerates and subcontractors get along with each other. Recently the President referred to the big companies’ unfair dealing with subcontractors and lukewarm new employment. At the President’s saying, the conservative press criticized the President as anti-corporatism and anti-marketism. In my opinion, however, the Korean conservative presses are anti-medium and small company and anti-people. The conservative presses write the conglomerates and their descendants as celebrities and describe them as heroes or patriots contributing to exporting. They are not s journalism, but a press merchant for ads.

In Korea, the President must make efforts to be similar to Theodore Roosevelt. Theodore Roosevelt simply did not referred to it but showed himself the conducts. (The end)

The Wise Choice of Korea's New People

In Korea, there are not noble families like Japan and Britain. The royal family and noble classes of the Chosun Dynasty, after the Japanese colonial period, were completely rooted out out of the Korean people and society. Korean people thought that the royal family and noble classes were considerably responsible for the shameful colony.

Since the new nation of 1945, the new established classes have been forming slowly. The first established group is the wealthy families named Jaebul like Samsung, LG, Hyundai etc. But Korea’s wealthy families are not respected by people, because most of them have been involved in irregularities, for example illegal inheritances and briberies, in addtion to lack of noblesse oblige.

Politicians, governmental servants, and knowledged scholars have not also earned the esteem of general people, because they looked self-dedicated, conceited, and not so able to deal with social long problematic affairs. Therefore, no classes have authority to persuade the people. In other words, the complaining and angry people are gradually revealing their power directly.

The today’s people are not the same as the past ones. The past ones are friendly to same hometown, same alumni, and private relationships. Whenever the election days come in, the old people used to vote for their privately related candidates. Now the new people changed, and at least began to change their past voting behaviors.

Korea’s democracy has evolved into more desirable directions step by step through people’s demoratic revolutions, the imprisonment of two corrupted ex-presidenst, etc.

In all these hard, but proud roads towards democracy, there appeared a class of ‘collective free-riders’. They are the prosecution. which could be said in fact the full benefiaries of Korea’s democracy. The people had needed the prosecution to punish the deeply rooted, corrupted politicians, governmental servants, and enterprisers. The prosecution at last jailed two ex-presidents. And at the latest, the prosecution summoned the just before president, Rho Moo-hyun, and pressed to confess his wrongdoings. The prosecution leaked out unconfirmed charges to the news media to create the good public opinions for their investigation. Rho Moo-hyun was a human-rights and labor-movement lawyer from a commercial high school, and as a stubborn progressive politican distanced himself from the wealthy families owning several big companies. He had a few friends of small and medium-sized enterprisers. He and his wife seemed to have gotten financial helps from them before the presidential office. The charged amount was ‘very small’.

The former president threw himself to dealth off the cliff behind his retired home. His death aroused tremendous people’s sympathy, especially younger generation and middle-agers. He has almost all popular factors that he is a self-made man, a solitary idealist against the establihsed classes, and that he is a warmer European dreamer other than an American dreamer of marketism and competition.

The new people are angry about the prosecutors. The prosecutors are from the middle and poor classes. Most of them have an inclination seeking success, for example gripping political power, social privileges, and wealth on their hands. Of course, they have a sense of justice, however their collective interest and solidarity of the prosecutors themselves appeared stronger than social responsibilities, contribution to community and universal principles. They are usually married to wealthy families.

In the military autocratic period, the political power controlled the prosecution as well as the people. In today’s almost complete democracy, no power can control the prosecution. The prosecution has the exclusive right to investigate and prosecute any suspect. All classes except for the prosecutors themselves are fearful of them. The prosecution has become an only autocratic class in Korea. After leaving the office, they are able to choose three ways, independent lawyer or lawmaker, or corporate solicitor for the conglomerates.

The people have known not only such a fact of the proscutors’ privileges, but also their ‘curved’ ambitions. The people began to pay attention to the prosecutors’ behaviors. Just in time, the incident of ‘sponsored’ prosecutors happened. The ‘dark’ customary sponsorship between the prosecutors and enterprisers stirred up the public and mass media. The congress was forced to organize the special prosecutors to investigate the case objectively. The president appointed the special prosecutors recommended from the congress.

This year there were two elections. The new people showed their clear will at these elections. The voters gave the insolent ruling party severe defeat at the earlier election, whereas at the later election they made stern judgment to the opposition party which ignored the people’s expectations after the earlier overwhelming winning.

The new people would become a real soruce and asset of true advancement. What a wonderful phenomenon in Korean modern history.! (The end)

The Wild Old West of the Smartphone and SNS

Mass media have had many problems, though they have some good advantages to society such as democracy. One of the most blamed problems is that the voices of mass media might not be representative of the general people, rather even could be much twisted, biased, or exaggerated than the balanced line.

Since 1990s, some unreasonable and blind lauders for any new media including internet and new technologies appeared and disappeared repeatedly. They almost seem irresponsible for their arguments. If their overstated praises proved wrong, they slyly change their logic, saying the conditions and situations have unexpectedly become altered.

Recently as users of facebook and twitter increase explosively worldwide, flippant cultists for SNS (Social Networking Services) appeared on the new media publicizing stage. They argue that the information on the SNS could be the most faithful. Some foxy advertisers are advertising that the ads of SNS would be much effective. And then thoughtless reporters write as a parrot that the cultists and followers are saying. The social media publicists debase traditional media intentionally as if a jealous girl sneers at her syster’s flaws.

Friends’ talks are believable? That claim is really foolish! The talks on the SNS are believable or unbelievable. If your friend says ‘Inception’ is very interesting, you could believe his judgment. But if the goods and services are becoming expensive and complex, the information on the SNS is in fact useless for you to judge on buying or not. Moreover, how to survey these delicate information which is sure to be too ambiguous to interpret? And how about the tremendous survey cost?

As you know, the effects of advertisements on the traditional media such as newspapers and TV are still incalculable. The Internet sites argue that they are so targeted that their ads effects are calculable. The assertion that the Internet ads are more targeted looks only logically correct, the consistent relationship between the Internet ads and purchasing is hardly provable. In my opinion, the most substantial and useful effect of ads is to create and boost a good impression and image about the advertising goods and services as broad and deep in people as possible. Without this mood-creation, the simple targeting is at best similar to direct-mail marketing. Target marketing itself is absurdly exaggerated.

In a stance of companies, especially producing consumer goods. the SNS are irritable, because the SNS are speakers of bad rumors and evaluations. People instinctly like rumors and slanders. People see immediately whether some viral words are publicist-made or not.

In conclusion, do not brag about a few conveniences of the SNS and smart phone. Humble yourselves. Time will judge the big mouth and the real champion. (The end)

A Regional Newspaper's Experiment

In Korea there is a regional newspaper owned by 6300 residents of Keyngsang Nam Do (south Province of Korea). The newspaper named Keyngnam Domin Daily was founded in 1999 for the purpose of an independent press freed from the ruling power, for example, the conservative party, some conglomerates, and central authorities.

Last month, the paper changed chief editor. New chief editor is Kim Joo-wan who has shown real professionalism and been sincerely committed to public journalism. Just before being selected chief editor, he had left the paper and set up a new internet news site titled 100in.com, consisting of 100 free lancers [bloggers]. The 100in.com also seeks regional and public journalism.

Kim said firmly, “Regional news media must go nearer to their communities. There is no other selection. Beyond merely reporting regional news very well, we will dig out the present issues, uncover social shady places, investigate indigenous corruption and structural irregularities.”

He added, “Regional papers have not been subject to big internet portals fortunately, as the portals excluded regional papers. We are planning to form online regional community through public journalism and real region-friendly determination.”

In Korea, even central major newspapers are dependent on big portals, let alone internet news sites. But in my opinion, internet expansion that seems never to stop is almost approaching the peak. As smartphones might further internet expansion a little, there has to be no large jump.

People will begin to feel tired of rubbish information, meaningless twittering, ubiquitous ads. People have to look for real faithful information and a moving contents. (The end)

Unpleasant Banner Ads

Whenever I enter into Kores’s news sites, they do not fail to irritate my emotions because their banner ads cover part of the report I want to read. Presumably since last year, most news sites begin to place two banners over the report. Moreover, banners’ photos such as implants and diet ads do not seem to match news, and perhaps people have to grimace at the unpleasant pictures.

I know their financial trouble so much that they are desperately struggling to survive. The very cause that news sites were caught in the egde of survival is thought the low quality of the reports. In Korea, few trained journalists moved to internet news sites because of less pay and harder work than newspapers’.

If the Korea’s biggest portal, Naver, do not permit internet news sites to show their news contents on the central window, they are hardly able to exist as news site. Internet portals made newspapers sales decrease, and as a result, newspapers had laid older journalists off. The discharged journalists gave up their jobs, and transferred to other work, for example, public relations.

The advent of internet portals and news sites made difficult financial situations of traditional newspapers and magazines. The problem is that while the portals have become bigger and richer, tradidtional news media and internet news sites have turned poorer and are deeply dependent on the portals, so that the journalists, whether they belong to newspapers or internet news sites, are in a low morale. What is worse, in order to increase clicking on their reports, news sites use tricky and ‘hook’ titles, of which real contents are too exaggerated or even different.

Only faithful, informative and useful news and analyses can attract ads enough to sustain news sites continually. Now Korea’s online journalism urgently needs qualified journalists. Who can pay the qualified journalists? Now there seems to be no solution. (The end)

TimaxSoft's disappointment

TimaxSoft, local largest SW company, was entered into a state of workout July 6th by its main bank, Woori bank. TimaxSoft has experienced severe financial difficulties for challenging against global competitors like MS.

The company is Korea’s typical SW one founded by Dr. Bak Dae-hyun, ex-professor of KAIST. The major cause of TimaxSoft’s failure is considered excessive diversification from its competent middle-way SW. That is the company invested much capital to develop and launch local-made OS first against MS Window, and also ran into SI market, where large companies had already occupied stably. In the last 2008, the company exceeded sales of 100 billion won, the first record accomplishment as a local SW firm. Many people praised its ambition and expected surprising success, as feeling a little doubtful.

When the company plunged into the SI market, large companies began to regard TimaxSoft as their competitor. The alternative window replacing MS Window delayed its real launching, and as a result Timaxcore, SW developing subsidiary of TimaxSoft, was taken over by Samsung SDS.
TimaxSoft’s failure tells us above all that the small enterpreneur’s company focuses on its own best ability. Too quick diversification could bring passionate novice into close extinction. (The end)

Low-speed Electric Car in Seoul

Low-speed electric vehicles are running on Seoul roads with a speed of 60 kilometers (37.3 miles) per hour or less from last April.

The electric vehicle weighs 1361kg (including battery). The fuel cost is estimated one tenth (140,000 won per year) of the gas vehicle expenses. Presently Seoul city government operates five ones for the use of ordinary city working and watching illegal parking. And the city plans to increase to a total of 15 ones by the end of this year.

The general people can buy the electric vehilces from next year. One charging battery can run 60-100km. CT&T, electric vehicle firm, has exported e-Zone two-seat car, which is smaller than GM Daewoo’s four-seat Matiz – one of the most popular minicar here.

The company called the electric car more cost-effective than other mincars, singling out the Matiz. To travel 120 kilometers, the e-Zone uses 12 kilowatts of home electricity, which CT&T said would cost 1,120 won, while the Matiz would cosume 8 liters (2.1gallons) of gasoline, which would sell for 13,313 won. The vehicle can be charged at home.

CT&T was founded in 2002 by former Hyndai Motor executives, including CT&T CEO Lee Young-ki. Since then it has been developing electric cars, for example, golf carts. The company said that it will continue to focus on exports.

AD Motors produces a two-seat electric car, the Aurora. That vehilce is capable of 120 kilometers of travel on a full charge, which is obtained from a regular home outlet. AD Motors was also founded by former Hyndai Motor engineers. It has a factory and research center in Hwaseong, Gyeonggi Province, capable of producing 500 vehicles a month, with production to ramp up to 2,000 by the end of this year.

Assuming it runs 100 kilometers per day over 20 days a month, it would cost only 10,000 won for electricity. It would take four or five hours to charge the vehicle at home, and the battery is meant to last 10 years. (The end)

Transparent Government's R&D Management

Hwang Chang-gyu, head of the R&D Office, said that their goal is not the top of diverse high-techs in the world, but the uniqueness different from the existing technologies. He stressed that their way is not to accept the requirements of the present industrial circles, instead, we will select and concentrate on some unique industries needed for the future.

The Ministry of Knowledge Economy in charge of the R&D Office had already announced five fields for the R&D: current major industires (automobile, ship-building, steel, aerocraft, mechanics, chemistry, textile); information-communication industries; converged new industries (bio-tech, total health care); parts and material industries; energy industreis.

Until now, state-backed R&D has been loose, and even part of research money leaked into doubtful projects. So far, it has been prevalent in the scene that "the government’s R&D budgets are free under no owners so that whoever do not ‘eat’ the budgets are idiots." In small countries like Korea, state-backed money is important, but how to spend the money is more and more important than anything. In case huge money invest on worthless or unnecessary projects, the money could be poisonous on the eco-system and balanced development of the whole industries.

The R&D Office chose five regular managing directors on later May, who are responsible for deliberating and determining candidates for the aid. But the lineup of the office seems to be too big company-slated, especially Samsung. Mr. Hwang, head of the office, and Yoon Jong-yong, adviser of the office, are former CEOs of Samsung Electronics Company. Two standing managing directors are each fomer CEOs of Hyndai Autonet and SK Broadband.

The Ministry of Knowledge Economy did not contain environmental industry in the state-backed R&D lists. It might be a big mistake. The environmental industry should become as fundamental, huge and prosperous as today’s gas and oil energy. (The end)

Going Back To Farming

The night course for farming education is crowding with baby-boomers living in Seoul. The baby-boomers born just after the truce (1953) of the Korean War have begun to retire from full-time working lives about last year.

The course for purpose of going back to farming in rural regions was organized by the Rural Development Administration. The last fifth course was fully enrolled early only five days after its public notice. As originally the fixed number of trainees was 60, the number was forced to be 80 because of too many applicants. Therefore, the next sixth course is already completely filled with the remaining applicants.

Seeing the trainees, the fifties of age are 40 persons, half the fixed number, forties 21, below thirties 13, over sixties 6.

The National Agricultural Cooperative also opened the night farming course for city office workers in Seoul and Geonggi Province. The distinctive featue of its first selection was similar with the one of the Rural Development Administration’s course.

This phenomenon of going-back-to-farming does not seem to represent a temperary passion. In today’s economy, it has been long that mega-cities did not offer jobs. As the young and middle agers still have fantasy about city’s luxurious lives, not a little of clever and brave retirees are starting to ride the train going forward to green valleys. (The end)

New Factors "Secure and Pleasant"

The visitors’ satisfaction measurements to Seoul are increasing steadily. According to Seoul City Government’s report surveyed on 2,000 foreigners passed through six airports during last Febuary and March, ‘satisfied’ answers are 91.2%. The satisfaction measurements are increased, compared to 84.9% of last year, and 79.1% of 2007. The answerers “I will come back to Seoul” are also increased to 88%, compared to 67% of 2007.

About the reasons “Why did you choose Seoul as a touring place?”, “shopping and leasure” answers are 74.4%, “business” 12.1%, “visiting to friends and relatives” 8.5%, and “Korean waves” 1.8%.

While last year the financial crisis led to rapid contraction of the world touring demands, visitors to Korea uniquely in Asia rose to high rates. Visitors to Korea last year are 7.82 million, 13.4% up compared to the previous year, whereas China and Japan dropped each 2.7% and 18.7% during the same year.

Experts analyzed that Korea’s tourists growth owes lower price indexes than Japan, more secure and pleasant than China. An official of Seoul City Government related to tourism, said that they are to develop health and cosmetic surgical tourism and to simplify immigration procedures in cooperation with the Ministry of Justice. Online Shopping Economy

Nowadays security offices of apartments are screaming with continual delivered parcels such as clothing, shoes, toilet rolls, cosmetics, computers, rice cakes, etc. These things sent from home-shopping TVs and Internet shopping sites are ordered by residents. These virtual marts’ sales are increasing exponentially during the last one or two years.

Apartment janitors are complaining about no time to patrol, collect rubbishes, on account of endless delivering. They call residents to recover their parcels every two or three times, however, some people do not come in soon, even show themselves the next day. Janitors hardly leave their seats because the parcels might be stolen. A janitor says, “Recently half of my work seem the management of delivered parcels.”

The present phenomenon of home deliveries could be described a kind od ‘extraordinary’ one. As being well-known in the world, Korea’s residence features crowded apartments at a few big cities including Seoul. Therefore, delivery services are easy to flourish structurally.

In addition to this residential circumstance, new favorable ones are boosting home delivering unimaginably. The favorable stimulators are the vitalization of electronic payments and housewives’ working rushes.

The general awkwardness toward online paying settlements disappears except for old people. Decisively wives, controler of home economy, are beginning to exploit Internet banking, and moreover they are rushing into the working fronts owing to chronic unstabilization of economy. Today’s women have little time to browse around magnificient departments or discount marts. For the time being, it seems that online shopping would draw women’s attention. (The end)

The Revaluating of Traditional Technologies

Traditional technologies such as casting, molding, welding, plastic processing, heat treatment, surface treatment are still essential to manufacturing industries. These technologies are called 3D (Dirty, Dangerous, Difficult) ones so that young people has avoided working at them. But these traditional technologies are solving the most basic and last technical cruxes for higher quality of products recently.

The Ministry of Knowledge Economy reported to President Lee Myung-Bak a new plan on May 6th 2010 that it changes the 3D technologies to new 3D (Digital, Descent, Dynamic) ones, and officially renamed “roots industry” to them.

The ministry prioritized manpower for implementing the plan. The enrolled students of the meister high schools that learn roots technologies are increased from now 600 to 1,000 until 2012. The qualifying age of ‘Meister (great master)’ is lowered from 20-year working tenure of their technologies to 15-year working. The government decided to select the numbers of meister three times than the present, and to give adding points (very advantageous to purchasing an apartment) to houseless roots technicians having worked over five years when they win the ownership of new apartments.

The ministry is to graft IT and robot technologies onto roots technologies so that the processes are automated, smarter, and result in much less defective products.

The general perception on the roots industry is still old-fashioned and awkward, however, in the frontlines of industries the old technologies are being revaluated, especially in automobiles, shipbuilding, smartphones, home appliances. Global companies are more depending on the old technologies at which more money and more technicians are gathering. Experts say that Korea is challenging Japan, traditionally technology-competent country. Meanwhile the USA and most European countries had given up the old technologies a long time ago because young people disliked working in those hard fields. (The end)

Skylife Is Rising Vigorously

Skylife, Korea’s unique satellite TV station, is rising surprisingly this year after four-year consecutive steady profit. The company during the early few years since its opening on March 2002 had been branded as “hopeless headache” to the investors and the government. The satellite TV wearily struggled to capture city’s viewers with CATV already dominating in crowded apartments. It also faced tough resistance of regional terrestrial TVs, which were fearful that their key stations’ programs relayed by the satellite channels would deprive regional viewers of them. Regional broadcasts unions required the satellite TV not to relay their central broadcasting completely. Skylife absolutely could not accept the unions’ argument. After undergoing many twists and turns, it settled down that regional broadcasting is being relayed and given one superstation channel for the regional broadcasts.

Skylife held the regular shareholders’ general meeting on April 25, 2010 and settled the accumulated deficits through the last four-year net profit and and reduction of the capital. A high-post executive said, after the general meeting, that the company would show two-digit growth rates of each sales and net profit this year and surpass 3 million subscribers within the end of this year.

The main factors for the strong soaring are indicated two: the first is a special service combining its satellite TV and IPTV’s VODs of KT (Korea's second largest telecommunication company). The subscribers can enjoy real-time channels like CATV and additionally can watch tens thousands VODs of IPTV except for the IPTV’s real-time channels. KT is the largest shareholder of Skylife.

The second factor is that Skylife is broadcasting 61 high-definition channels about two times than 30-40 ones of CATV. This HD-centered channels strategy has helped to give it to form a high-class image.

The CATV presently accounts for over 80 percent (15 million subscribers) of the whole viewers and has been threatening the terrestrial and satellite TV positions during the last 10 years. But recently the CATV experienced the first decrease of its subscribers on the quarter basis. The strong surge of Skylife is shaking the firm castle of CATV. (The end)

The Failure of the Restrictive Real-name Registration

The restrictive real-name registration made for curbing ‘cyber-bullying’ was effective on April 1, 2009 in Korea. According to a thesis submitted to the National Seoul Graduate School of Public Administration by Woo Ji-Suk of the same school on April 8, 2010, malicious comments posted on Internet bulletin boards decreased from 13.9% before the real-name registration to 12.2%, which was meant the new system shows little improvement significantly.

Conversely, participants posting on bulletin boards dropped steeply to over one third compared to prior to the registrating system. In other words, the effects of the real-name registration are very limited, but the shrinking of the social communication is rather conspicuous.

The Korea Communications Commission relieved Youtube of the real-name registration by a reason that it is a foreign site. For this, Pandora TV, local video site, publicized its complaint, saying the exemption is an opposite discriminating decision. Pandora TV said that the numbers of its page views after the system plunged 15-20% compared to before the one.

The system was first applied to 37 sites of over average three hundreds thousands users per day on June 2007. And then, as it happened that cyber-bullying droved a celebrated woman to suicide and allegedly boosted candlelight vigil of mad-cow disease, the applied criterion extended to the sites of over one hundred thousands users, presently 167 sites.

The association of online reporters pronounced a commentary supporting the repeal of the real-name registration last week. (The end)

The Shifting of Sports Viewers

Sports viewers on the Internet are increasing in a large degree. The viweres of Korea’s professional baseball games seen through 'Africa', Korea's Internet portal company, jumped to increased three times compared to last year. Naver’s viweres also rose to two times more than last year.

Some people are saying that this phenomenon is the undeniable evidence of sports viewers’ shifting from CATV to the Internet. In reality, the sports channels of CATV are overwhelmed in fear that their wielding power could go over to the Internet. But I would like to agree with that in half.

The same sports viewers watch TV or Internet according to their watching circumstances, for example, when they are at home, they should enjoy big screen and good definition of CATV on the sofa. While they are working in their office, they would watch the games on the desk-top computer stealthily. In the past, working in the office they could not watch the games technically and physically. Therefore, more accurately speaking, the viewing people on the Internet are added to the whole sports marketing population. We, however, have to remember the fact that the advertising pie has the ceiling, though the viewing people of sports games increase wholly.

Presently four sports channels of CATV are paying almost two times (2.1-2.3 billion won per year) more than portals such as Naver (1.3-1.5 billion won per year). If the viewing population between two platforms would be opposite, broadcast rights money of Internet companies will naturally increase, the one of CATV has to be discounted. But the sports channels of CATV would not disappear as long as their strong points like comfortabilities and nice screen remain still. This is the sports economy which some experts never judge easily.

Moreover, today's technology advancement is dooming some disruptive changes, which might cause the end of mass viewing population, mass advertisements, and tremendously big money. (The end)

The Recipe for the Young Unemployed

Korean students usually attend the university for about six years, due to going abroad for English studying. When they submit the application for getting a job to companies, Toeic results have to be included in it.

Poor students when graduating from the university are indebted to banks because of loans for school expense.

Except graduates obtaining regular jobs, considerable ones go to work usually for four years in a certain company, each two years as a dispatched worker and contract one, and then dismissed from the company permanently. Because if a company employs a worker as the same type of work for over two years, it must continue to employ the worker as a permanent one according to the labor law. So the company employs a worker for example as a dispatched type, just before completing two years, fires and then employs the person as a contract one nominally.

A sociologist who studied and obtained doctorate in France wrote a book titled “The 880,000 won’s Generation”, which described unemployed graduates or temporary young people in a very realistic tone. The book was paind much attention to by many people, because it bore the gloomy sketches of the young graduate workers and the grotesque foreboding of the market capitalism, together with the obvious message expressing the number ‘880,000 won (about $780 of a monthly salary)’ title. The sociologist's prospect seems unfortunately not wrong so far.

Korea’s economy caught in a state of national default was helped from IMF on December 1997, after that Korea’s economy has been kept in the low-rates of growth compared with the previous period of the high-rates of over 8-9 percent per year like today’s China. As a result, in spite of compartively sound economy, several graduates did not obtain regular jobs, even worse the unstable graduate ones have accumulated continually since that times. The local companies which had experienced the cruel recession avoided employing the middle-abled graduates as a regular worker in consideration with labor cost and a strong union. They employ excellent and necessary graduates as a regular basis.

The unemployment is nowadays a worldly prblem regardless of the developing level of the country’s economy. The unique recipe is to boost entrepreneurship in order to make jobs. But the entrepreneurship is related to human will and creativity rather than the solid economic policy. We should analyze the real world objectively, but what is more important is we should encourage the young people to change their attitudes positively. Any countries have their own economic problems, and historically we could see that the presnt economic problems are smaller than the previous times. (The end)

A Non-possessive Life

A wide-known Korean monk, Beob Jung, died in March 11 at the age of 78. He entered into the Buddhist way at the earlier 20s of his age of 1955. Especially, after he had went through Buddhism learning, undergoing Zen meditating discipline, editting of Buddhism dictionary, and editor in chief of the Buddhism Newspaper, since 1975 he has lived alone in small temples, only writing books and zen-meditating.

He gave valued messages to people by books. His most famous book is ‘Non-possession’, which was printed 180 editions.

Just before his death, he said, “Now, I am going to desert my time and space. Do not arrange my funeral rites which should be worthless and annoying others. Do not prepare a coffin and shroud for me, quickly burn my body worn in usual monk’s robes at a nearby and convenient place. Do not try to pick up small crystals in my ashes, and do not set up a pagoda for me.”

There was a long line of many condolers in the ground of Kilsang Temple, where his body is placed. President Lee Myong-Bak also visited the temple, reminisced about his teachings. (The end)

The Regulation of Marketing Spending

The Korea Communications Commission and the leading telecom operators agreed to curb their marketing spending in March 6, 2010.

The agreement is to cap their marketing spending at 20 percent of their annual sales from next year, and this year to limit 22 percent in consideration of the vitalization of smartphones just recently shown in local market. If this agreement not observed, the Commission is to take strong disciplinary measures such as fine-imposing and suspension of business etc.

Choi Si-Joong, chairman of the Korea Communications Commission, heads of the telecom operators and other Internet companies had a meeting at Press Center for a purpose of the vitalization of mobile Internet, compromised the guidelines of marketing spending observance.

In general, the marketing spending mainly consists of mobile subsidies and giveway of cash or commodities. The three telecom operators have been increasing the marketing spending to 25 percent of their annual sales, which plays a virtually last promotional resort in a circumstance that consumers can hardly sense the differences of moblie phones qualities. According to the guidelines, the marketing spending statement should be publicized every quarter.

The telecom operators said the saved money from the marketing spending would be used on R&D of mobile technologies development and content creation. The three competitors also agreed to integrate each application store and immediately to operate a task force team for working out its integrating procedure.

But critics indicate whether the governmental rule of the marketing spending has validity, or not, moreover, whether the guidelines could be well observed remains questionable. Nevertheless, it is still strongly grounded that the function of government as an adjustor and regulator needs such a situation that the excessive competition of the three operators exhausts themselves and encroach their potential. The Separation of Korean Unions

Lee Seok-Che(president of KT) and Kim Gu-Heon (its union leader) adopted the ‘Joint Declaration for Creative New Culture between the Labor and Management’ in March 5, 2010 at Olleh Campus located in Seo-cho dong Seo-cho gu Seoul.

The joint declaration contains ▲ the initiative of corporate value creation & permanent continued peace between the labor and management ▲ efforts of employment stability & exertion of the win-win program for both parties ▲ action of social responsibility ▲ job-creating.

The KT’s labor and management additionally agreed to set up scholarship funds of 400million won for poor students of secondary and high schools. The funds are formed by union dues and company’s donation.

KT union which is one of the largest unions last July withdrew from the Korean Confederation of Trade that has been blamed for the radical movement. There is another moderate unions organization, the Federation of Korea Trade in Korea.

Before this, ‘New Hope Coalition’, the third unions organization, held its inauguration in March 4, 2010 at the Civil Servant Training Center of Seoul City Government, where 120 leaders and executives of 40-odd unions participated. This newly organized confederation includes KT, Hyndai Heavy Industries, Seoul Metro, National Federation of Region Public Corporations Unions, National Federation of Civil Servants Unions, National Federation of Civil Servants Unions of the Local Offices of Education, etc. They adopted the establishing purposes that they would promise a clean labor movement, serve laborers and the people. Especially, they stressed a labor movement trusted by the people, through policies and cooperation rather than physical activities. They stated clearly that they would seek not political purposes and solutions, but practical benefits for themselves.

The conservative is welcoming this separation as an reasonable choice. We cannot know now that the separation leads to sudden nominal loose unions, in fact, similar to a collapse of labor movement in Korea. But it seems certain that the split would accelearte weakening the unions’ solidarity. (The end)
