Samsung's Revolution of HR Recruitment in Korea

Samsung has been famous for indiscrimination of academic background in Korea, while most companies still have excessive expectations about academic performances. It is known that Samsung does not permit forming the same school alumni fraternities. I believe that global competence of Samsung is owed to this indiscrimination of academic background, which is drawing the potentials of all workers to the utmost and loyalty to the company.

Korean society has the worst traditional habit that the people of the same academic school and same hometown are supporting and uniting one another almost unconditionally. The founder of Samsung, Baeng-Chul Lee, challenged the contemporary customs of academic cliques such that he chose newcomers in terms of their substantial abilities, possibilities, and personalities (sincerity etc.). His management slogan was the ‘Priority of Excellent Workers’. His son, present chairman of Samsung, has followed the slogan. Chairman Keun-Hee Lee tells his CEOs look for super talents globally, and stresses, “Do not be stingy about employing good HR.”

The workers of regional colleges account for 25-27%, which is higher compared with the other companies. Samsung recently said that they will increase the rate to 35%. For that, they will choose the alumni of regional colleges more than before.

Since about ten years, fortunately the discrimination of academic background has been gradually thinned in Korea. Why?

Firstly Many of young Koreans have entered much more excellent universities than Korea’s ones. They are being changed of a frog in the well. Secondly, they began to understand that experiences and creativity are more important than knowledge. In the basic stage of economic development, knowledge is a decisive element of competitiveness. Now in the more mature stage, they need expertise and creativity, which are formed in the work place, not in the school.

As a matter of fact, the last demand for education is from working places, most of which are companies. So big companies can change the bad perceptions such as discrimination of academic background. Big companies could become a facilitator for social advances, not a receiver of prejudices.

Samsung is worth being praised because of this recruiting change. It is expected that other big companies follow this trend. (The end)

Prepare for Post-Eurozone

Almost all seers begin to think that the eurozone runs to the dead alley. Now in retrospect, the vision and implementation of the eurozone seem to be too ideal, being too optimistic about individual nations’ collective selfishness. Can the eurozone that German economy power and political influences prevail over be kept on and accepted patiently by other members?

In economic world, there are or there have to be rich nations, middle-leveled ones, and poorer ones. In one country there are also several differences in terms of individual wealth. Therefore, they always compete with one another, entice large or small pieces of dissention, so that we need political action. Physically, the larger a country is, the severer its conflicts are. The typical examples are China, U.S.A., and Russia, India. Generally peoples and politicians have wrong fantasy that superpowers would be unconditionally good for themselves. No, the reality is the opposite. A superpower has to be worth it so that it is forced to be entailed into wars and bloody strife.

Europeans could not forget the old Roman Empire. They missed the glory of Western Imperialism in their deep hidden minds. They had wanted to build a new Roman Empire, which competes over U.S.A, China, Russia, India, etc. It is going to be judged a great chicanery. Their lethal mistake was to adopt one currency. They should have been contented with becoming a union of the similar political and diplomatic policy. The unique economic union was a fallacious choice.

I was impressed with the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee, through which I confirmed the power and effectiveness of the British identity. European people like the British have their own identity and pride of living in the regions and countries. It is unimaginable that they give up their pride, culture, and identity for the real economic benefit. The more the eurozone is becoming a country by fiscal consolidation, the more the eurozone will be Germanized. If so, the other member countries can permit the new economic hegemony? This is a baloney. And also Germans will feel that they work more and pay tax more. Can they bear this unfairness continuously? Although the fiscally consolidated eurozone can be formed, the authority has to spend the days on disputing economic policies.

The U.S.A. had needed tens of years forming the present clear authority. The eurozone could endure such a long way?

In my opinion, the eurozone tried to walk the opposite. Yes, we need the peace and harmony, but its condition is more real and effective under small and diverse scale of countries rather than superpowers.

Someone says that the euro need a ‘Marshall Plan’ once again. Maybe it might be right. The U.S.A. and the rest of the world might have to offer the second Marshall Plan, in order to save the eurozone. (The end)

It Is Meaningless For News To Be Free Or Not

As Warren Buffett recently bought 26 local newspapers in a row, it is again sparking the debate surrounding free of news.

One online reporter says, “Every Twitter user is potentially a journalist. Every blog author is publisher.” I want to answer it. “Twitter user is not a journalist, bloger is not a author or publisher.” Because they do not make a living on that job. We can make my table or seat at home, but we are not called carpenter.

If one online news company maintains their business by free news, that’s OK. No problem. They have users enough to read the free news, therefore, to attract advertisers.

Since the Internet age, general people are satisfied with free news such as TV news, online news, underground freesheets. Honestly most people do not feel the necessity of high quality news. But leaders, entrepreneurs, professionals, investors, and higher ranks of corporate persons willingly pay higher quality of news. These higher classes understand very well the business logic that good quality news needs efforts, time, and money. Therefore, they do not hesitate to buy quality news.

Now it is meaningless to debate free or not. Charged or free news has its own target. It can be simply defined that charged news is informative one, while free news is publicizing one. Charged news would be economic one, while free news is political, social, or cultural one. If any free news organization can offer free informative economic news, who cares? If any online news companies can offer volunteers’ reports or curated ones free of charge, then visitors’ number reaches the advertisers’ requirements, who picks a fight with you?

It’s about twenty years since the internet news has been serviced normally. Now quitting the exhaustive debate of ‘free news’, each of news companies should develop their own creative biz models and foster management expertise.

A professor predicted that local papers could close in the next 10 years. In fact, among today’s catastrophic changes, the prospect after 10 years should be a kind of deception. Although he might be an expert of technology, his mention is sure to be ignorant of culture and scientific philosophy governing the technology.

Generally seeing, such experts related to internet, IT, communications subtly speak haughtily, while the ones of other scientific and technological fields say carefully. (The end)

Now when Murdock's Tabloidism Quitting the Stage

It reveals that Murdock has used the journalists as his private soldiers illegal for his desires. It is not important whether Murdock has had a deep relation with the hacking. The really evil thing is he did tabloid journalism

News media have public nature, which is a feature clearly different from the other corporations. The news, analysis, and column themselves give impact on societies and the world.

As a matter of fact, owners of news media are apt to become an absolute magnate like Murdock, whom everybody is flattering or trembling in the front of. All the celebrities were afraid of Murdock’s two tabloids. The overused the power, and at last drank the lethal poisonous glass, the hacking.

Could it be said that Murdock’s two tabloids have only been loyal in satisfying the people’s curiosity? Almost all people have some flaws, let alone celebrities. It cannot be exempt from cruelly reporting private lives of celebrities or even general people, as the mass like the sensational stories. The freedom of the press is not guaranteed unlimitedly.

It is surprised as Korea’s journalist that the tabloid exploited a private investigator customarily. In Korea, such a job of private investigators is not permitted because of the abuse or misuse. I thought the rejection of private investigators’ introduction is a little excessive concern, but this hacking case changed my generosity. The private investigator is playing to a linkage between the news media and the police, though they should balance and check each other. It is a very threatening thing to democracy.

The general level of journalism of the advanced countries like Britain and U.S.A is much better than the one of Korea, especially in terms of detailed accuracy and several, objective facts. They, however, have a blemish, that is tabloids. In Eastern morality-ethics standard, sensationalism of tabloids seems similar to pornography, which expresses obsessive desires.

Westerners, whether intellectuals or grass-rooters, are likely to easily forget the virtue of balance. They crazily like or dislike celebrities. In Eastern societies, general people think that they themselves are able to become celebrities, especially in Korea and China. The Koreans and Chinese ended their dynasties about 100 years ago. Koreans do not show obsession with celebrities. Honestly whenever I see the Sun during visiting Britain, I felt disgusting about the cover. I always admire British quality broadsheets very much.

The worst point of sensational journalism is to dismantle the societies gradually and continuously, and as a result the competitiveness and community spirit of societies are falling down. All the human-made institutions and regimes have to be corrupt and degraded so that they must be remedied or punished in case of being deviated on the balanced road.

In Korea, too, sensational tabloids exist, but they have little effects on our society. Because their reports are not believed by anyone. The reports’ titles are boisterous, but have little concrete facts, full of guessing. Murdock’s tabloids did work too well, even mobilizing hacking. It might be good to their revenue, but surely be the worst to the society and people. (The end)
